Dr Malcolm Pines was among the first generation of Foulkes’s students who developed group analysis. He co-founded the first group analysis training programme in London in 1971 and edited the International Library of Group Analysis. He was highly active in promoting training in other countries. He contributed his consultative reflections to the development of Koinonia-Art. The last professional event he attended abroad was the 2014 Koinonia-Art International Conference, Experiential Learning about the Phenomena of Inclusion/Exclusion Within and Between the Traditions of Foulkes, Bion and Main. In all his subsequent encounters, he continued to take a keen interest in the School’s development.
Dr Erl Hoper
1940- 2025
Earl Hopper, PhD, was a sociologist, psychoanalyst, group analyst and organisational consultant, and a pioneering figure in group analysis. He distinguished himself as an exceptionally creative and prolific thinker and writer. He made an immense contribution to the development of foundational theories in our fields, profoundly shaping our understanding of groups, social processes and human experience. He was the editor of the New International Library of Group Analysis.
His friendship and collaboration with our training community began in 2004, through discussions on the visibility of the four basic assumptions in the traumatic experiences of psychosocial dynamics in our country. He participated in the 2014 Koinonia-Art Conference, contributing to reflections on bridges between psychoanalytic fields. Over the years, his consultative reflections on the development of the training community have become woven into the foundations of the School.

Bob Hinshelwood, Tija Despotović, Carla Penna, Marina Mojović, Earl Hopper, Teresa fon Sameruga and Malcolm Pines (2014, Kalemegdan)

David Armstrong
1934-2026
David Armstrong was one of the most significant and creative thinkers and writers in the Tavistock tradition of group dynamics. A participant in Bion’s groups, he had a remarkable capacity to remain with complexity. While others might rely on established theories and hurry towards answers based on what they already knew, he remained curious about the dynamics emerging beneath the surface, often unspoken. He was particularly well known for his work on social defence systems and the concept of the organisation-in-the-mind. From our first meeting in 2008, during the conception of the Belgrade SPOC training programme and training community, to our last meeting in 2026, in his garden in London, he offered deeply engaged consultative reflections and support of immense value. He has been providing consultancy over several years to GASi, as well as to our School. He participated in person at two international conferences in Belgrade and, for the tenth conference in 2026, agreed to facilitate a Social Dreaming session online, a method to which he was also deeply committed. He was also a friend of our colleague Branka Pecotić, at whose invitation he and Anton Obholzer took part in consultancy work at Valjevo Hospital.

Over a period of 25 years, she regularly visited Serbia and led study groups that gave rise to important psychoanalytic psychotherapy associations. In 1995, a regular study group was established, offering seminars and supervision in Kleinian psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This later developed into the London Link Association for Kleinian/Bionian/Neo-Kleinian Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Organisational Consulting, a member of the Serbian Union of Associations of Psychotherapists (SDPS), with Marina Mojović as its director.
In 1997, with Marina Mojović providing the initial coordination, a group for psychotherapeutic work with children and adolescents was formed, (coordinated by Svetlana Mudrić Virijević) and regularly led by Branka. In 2012, it developed into the Association for Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (UDAPS), a member of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (EFPP) and SDPS.
A group focusing on work with couples and families, coordinated by Miodrag Naunović and Jasna Veljković, developed into the Association for Couple and Family Psychotherapy, also a member of EFPP and SDPS. Work with organisations developed into the Koinonia-Art SPOK training programme and, from 2025, into the School.
Throughout her career, Branka was a long-standing collaborator of the Tavistock Institute in London and a member of ISPSO and OPUS.

He also spent six months working in the Institute of Psychiatry’s day hospital, one of the first two day hospitals in the world, established in 1946. In early 1966, the day hospital was reorganised to function as a therapeutic community, with a non-directive facilitated large group.
In 1968, Dr Kovačević was appointed to organise the therapeutic community on his department. In January 1972, he became Head of the Psychotherapy Section of the same department. In November 1972, a day unit was opened at the department’s Avala site, and he was entrusted with establishing and implementing its working organisation. This unit also functioned as a therapeutic community.
The unit, the first day hospital at the Neuropsychiatric Clinic, later developed into the Department of Neuroses and Personality Disorders, one of the three departments that subsequently formed the Centre for Day Hospitalisation at the Institute of Psychiatry, Clinical Centre of Serbia. Dr Kovačević was formally appointed Head of the Day Unit at Avala in October 1976, Acting Head of the Department in 1985, and Head of the Department of Neuroses and Personality Disorders at the Centre for Day Hospitalisation in January 1987.
